General Tips
By Alvaro Gutierrez -Lowvisionfriends.com Founder -
There are several things you can do to improve your mood, your attitude towards your eye problem and your entire life. I will try to give you tips that have helped me accomplish my goals:
- Stop complaining: Yeah, I know, it is easy, and it is hard not to sometimes, but you see, the mind is the most powerful tool we have and if we tell it that everything is bad and that all is a disaster, make no mistake, things will get worse and worse before they get better.
Complaining is what losers do, or have you ever heard a very successful person complain all day? Nah, I don't think so.
It is because complaining is the "coward" part of any situation, if you want to improve your life, you need to stop and ask yourself "Why am I complaining?" and ask this as well "Am I Taking things out of proportion?" and you will see that the answer is in both cases a very sad one.
Let's see, hmmm, to the first one, you can find all kinds of excuses to complain, but the fact of the matter is that instead of facing things as they come focusing on the solution of the situation you are in, you are focusing on the problem itself, like if you had no spirit and no hope for anything and more important, you are not showing any resources, you act without taking into account the brain you have.
I am sure you are better than that, complaining makes you weak, makes you NEGATIVE and fills yourself of terrible energy, forget about dating, finding a job or having good health, if you love to complain, things will get nasty.
You must always remind yourself that you need to solve problems, not to create new ones or make the ones you already have, bigger.
Through this very optimistic and positive section of our low vision website, we will recommend you reading material that can help you understand better what we mean and put it into action, remember I did not create this site to "compete" with other informative ones but to make it a different one with different approach on our low vision, a more deep and real approach, more "aggressive".
I want to make your life better and change how people who are full sighted see at us.
So please, when you have a problem, instead of throwing things to the floor or mirror, stop and think, do not drink alcohol neither take pills, focus on how to solve the problem, look at it this way:
You already have a problem, why to get "mentally intoxicated" creating a second problem, makes no sense at all.
Don't you think it is better to try solving the problem?????
Then, DO IT.
- Don't lie: I know this one is hard too sometimes, but let's be honest, by saying all is ok you will solve nothing, if you feel sad, bad, down, you need to face this with the people who love and care for you.
- Tell them what is wrong, and how they can help you, do not isolate you, NEVER, because if you do, then you will have to go through that bad time alone and I am telling you "been there, done that" and is not fun neither smart.
Even Superman needed his wife to takecare for him so come on, wake up and admit what's wrong so you can start finding a solution, with the help of the ones who always are there for you.
Lies are a sign of weakness and are lack of character and will take you nowhere. So start saying the truth always and that will make things better.
- Find what drives you/motivates you: Per example, you may recall a day when you were in a party and you were energized and very animated but you cannot remember what triggered it.
Well, think about it, may be a girl/guy that was at the party that day, maybe was the music you danced there, maybe was the good vibe of the whole crowd, maybe was the whole experience of being at a party after so long...
We all have things that motivate us, as more we learn about ourselfs, more things we find as tools when we are down or depressed to avoid a very long and tragic depression.
I heard that having any kind of illness makes you a depressing person, and i say to that "Oh, I thought would make you stronger and not weaker".
Listen all, the truth is while we all adjust to our disease, can be hard, but when we come to terms that we have an eye illness, we all as human beings adjust, and find ways to enjoy life to the fullest without being depressed, at least is my case.
- Set goals for your days, weeks, months or even for the whole year: It is very important to have goals, any kind of goals, small or big, but focus on achieving them at any cost.
It is a wonderful motivation to know for today you need to start your eye exercises, lose weight, learn Braille, you need to find a job and you have already a Online Resume ready, you need to ask that girl out, those things.
If you have goals, you will not have much time to be depressed, you just can't allow yourself to get depressed, you have GOALS to achieve.
- Turn back in time and re-live the good moments you had and the people you met that you enjoyed being with:
The best athlete in Sports History, Michael Jordan had a trick, that would "feed his mind" with extremely positive thoughts before a game and in the game itself.
He would close his eyes and remembered the moments he lived in a similar situation, where he was successful, and he would remember the good moments, the good shots, the power he felt when he achieved anything, he would recall his parents advicing him and the long hours of training day after day at College to get where he is now.
All of that would create a very powerful force inside Michael Jordan who has made him the most successful Sports figure of All Time.
A focus mind is unstoppable.
There are studies that prove positive thinking changes your life and allows you to make anything happen.
We all have good moments to remember and experiences that made us tough, so, let's never forget those moments and never forget either the people we met and what we shared with them because that makes us who we are too.
- Get a Pet: There is hardly any doubt pets can cheer you up, a cat, a dog, a canary, any pet can bring joy to your sad days and a new motivation to get better, to smile, just for your pet, we all know they ask for so little, and we can sacrifice alittle and get so much from them.
They are such a great company, they never want anything from us really, and we must appreciate that love and affection, because we know humans always want something in exchange.
Pets are a magnificent source of positive energy for our lives.
- Volunteer: Have you ever volunteer? It is amazing how your spirit gets happier when you do and you are making someone happy as well and you can do so much for others, there is no greater joy than seeing others smile and enjoy themselves.
There are all types of volunteering, in low vision centers, special camps for the blind, elderly with visual imparement and so on...
Check in your local churches and low vision centers to find the right volunteering work for you.
- Enjoy Yourself More: I ask, When was the last time you had a blast? When was the last time you did something you really like and enjoyed it? If you can't ask that you are in trouble. You need to do more things that you like, things that inspires you, that makes you smile, laugh and even get crazy in a good way!
You need to relax and take things easy, observe more what is around you, appreciate more your sorroundings, have fun, do what you always liked, and do it with the same joy you used to, you are the same person you were before having low vision, nothing inside of you has changed, you are the same friend, husband or father, you must take control of your own life and never forget who you are as a human being.
I am sure that you may take things for granted, well, change that, enjoy what life has to offer, be optimistic, think this precious moment you are enjoying now, will repeat and many times in your life.
Live to the max every minute and see the good things you have in yourself, see how tough you are, and try to be more relaxed, stress is terrible for your eyes anyways!!!
